While the individual survival and first aid products we have used over the years have varied, the concept behind Crashkit has always remained the same. Crashkits have always been intended for one purpose: to provide the essential tools and equipment necessary to survive a true survival situation, anywhere in Canada, during any season. In order to accomplish this, the primary design objective focused on initial impact survival. Statistically, the majority of aviators who experience a ‘forced landing’ will survive, however, typical survival kits do not always seem to be so lucky.

With this in mind, our development process focused on building the ultimate survival kit. Not simply a first aid pack with a few extra items in it, but an all encompassing purpose built survival kit designed to withstand a typical aviation crash. In the interest of additional content, the kit was also designed to be used only once. This allows an inordinate amount of product to be packaged inside, and at the same time allows the Crashkit to withstand the most rigorous abuse. Once the seal is broken and the case opened however, it is virtually impossible to reclose it again.

For this reason we advise you only open your Crashkit in case of a real, life threatening emergency.

Originally designed using cheaper plastic cases, we soon realized these were fraught with problems. Not only did they leak, they would break simply by dropping them on the tarmac. When we went looking for a solution, we found Pelican Canada. Since being granted OEM Pelican Distributor status in early 2005, all Crashkits have used only genuine Pelican brand cases.

As the industry standard in protective cases, Pelican brand cases are the best you can get. Made from a Polypropylene copolymer material that is light weight, durable and highly chemical resistant, these cases will withstand temperatures from -10°F (-23.3°C) to +210°F (98.9°C). All Pelican cases have been tested to MIL-C-4150J, ATA 300, Def Stan 81-41/STANAG 4280 and Ingress Protection (IP) standards.

With a pressure equalization system which allows air to pass, yet is still completely watertight, cases are easily opened despite pressure or altitude variation. A special membrane, (Gore-ePTFE) continuously allows the free passage of gases and vapors, equalizing the pressure differential between the enclosure and ambient pressure. Water, dust and dirt are repelled by the membrane, protecting contents and ensuring long term kit integrity.

Once we had decided on the Pelican cases, it was on to internal product selection and testing. Throughout the years, several products have been replaced or upgraded as we found better alternatives. Water purification for example was originally left to iodine tablets along with a neutralizer to make it somewhat drinkable. Not only did it taste awful, it was also unsafe for pregnant women and children. In addition, some people with shellfish allergies are also allergic to iodine. The last kit containing iodine was shipped the day before we discovered Aquatabs (back in 2006). Spark-Lite was the logical replacement for the old fashion flint and tinder.

Some items have always remained the same while alternative products have also been made available. Mainstay™ (lemon) food products have always been our mainstay; the choice of Mayday™ (apple cinnamon) products has also been added for variety.

All products contained within all Crashkits have been thoroughly tested to ensure they will work when you need them to work. Crashkits contain only the highest quality tools available.
